Annual Pre-review

I am one of those people who sets goals every year, and then does a public annual review of how the things I’m willing to share turn out. My goals are typically in categories: job achievements, personal fitness/health, side-gig, relationships (family, friends, personal), savings (trying to automate), travel (at least one new place), and writing/blogging.

Why yes, I set a writing goal each year that I generally fail. Clay has kept me on track recently with this 30 day challenge. And, I think I’m on target to not eat cat food in my 70’s and 80’s in terms of my savings/retirement goals. Sydney was the big trip this year and was terrific.

Examples: 2018, 2017, 2016.

Privately I go through every detail quarterly. And there are times when my progress toward a specific goal is absolutely, completely, zero. So in preparation for the 2019 review, I’ve been reviewing my calendar, and my personal journal, looking for those things that would be appropriate to share publicly.

Burning my goals and intentions for 2018
Burning my goals and intentions on December 31, 2018

So last year, I disclosed that I love the Midnight New Year’s Eve Hot Yoga class that ends with sending our wishes to the universe. And it’s not on the schedule yet for this year! And I’ve been looking forward to it all year, for real. I hope it shows up!

But I didn’t disclose my wishes from last year. They were love, success, joy, kindness, and health. There’s 29 days left in December. I’m optimistic that I can hit some of these! I’m pretty joyful by default. I think I am getting better at sharing and attracting kindness. At this point, I’d be ecstatic to achieve pain free running by year end! Success is mushy. What did I even mean? I have a great job, with fantastic people.

The rest is going to need to move to 2020. I have invested more time with family and friends this year. I’d like to think I am a better friend, but that isn’t exactly what I intended with my “love” wish. I think I’ll be ready to hang my online dating shingle in January 2020. I finally have clarity on what I am looking for, and what I think I can offer in that kind of relationship.

Is it weird to do this? What kind of things do you set goals around? Do you do it on the new year? Your birthday? Never?
