Let it snow

Denver is supposed to get 8 to 15 inches of snow in the next 24 hours. To me, that makes it the holiday season, and also makes me want to hunker down in my town house with things that bring me joy.

Clay recently posted a list of movies he watches over and over again. I’ve seen most of his, but the only one on his list that I ever chose to watch more than once was American Beauty. People might be boycotting Kevin Spacey’s movies these days (with few defenders like Judi Dench!), but he’s truly one of the most talented actors of my generation. It’s amazing the people he’s made real on screen.

My own list leans a bit more Disney, kind of.

The Sound of Music. One of the few movies my mom chose to watch (she was more of a reader than at TV watcher) each year was the Sound of Music. As a kid, I typically fell asleep during the scene where the Von Trapp family was performing publicly for the last time, and it wasn’t until I was much older that I understood the historical context, but every year, without fail, I watch this movie. But why does the captain have riding crop while walking on his estate with the baroness? We never see him with a horse, and he was a naval captain. That idiosyncrasy aside, I love every single thing about this movie.

Mary Poppins – the original. I recently saw Mary Poppins Returns, and it had all of the stuff, and yet, was no magical to me. It could just be that I LOVE Julie Andrews.

The Matrix. Generally the first one about 5 x more than the sequels.

Tomb Raider 1 or 2 (or the Tourist) – I find Angelina Jolie to be a stunning physical actress. It’s not so much what she says but the confidence she has in her movement. I find herincredibly visually stunning. Also her leading men in these films are great: Daniel Craig, Gerard Butler and Johnny Depp respectively.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. But, I’ll be honest, I skip most of the journey, climb every stinking mountain, cross every swap scene, and more recently some of the endless battle scenes. Let’s be clear, for me, it’s all about Aragorn’s journey, as much as Frodo’s, or Gandalf’s. And Viggo Mortensen is breathtaking in this role.

The final movie set on my list is the Matt Damon based Bourne series. I have run countless miles on the treadmill to these movies, especially the first 3. Even watching for the 20+ time, they hold my attention enough to make time pass effortlessly.

What movies to you watch over and over?
