Musical Guilty Pleasures

My friend Clay recently shared his. I didn’t really think of my music listening this way until I saw his list. I will confess that I really love Taylor Swift songs and I might turn up her songs and sing along when I am alone in my car, on a deserted road where no one could possibly see me. Clearly I am kind of embarrassed about loving her music.

Also anything Bach. I love the sound of harpsichord, and grew up with my grandmother who taught piano and organ, and played for a few churches and funeral homes for 60+ years of her life. Also, I love traditional Christmas Music (think Bing Crosby) and the related hymns since we’re coming into that season.

But I think what all of my musical guilty pleasures have in common is that they can all literally bring me to tears, if my mood is just right. So here are a few of those songs, that I just might have bookmarked on my computer.

This song sums up everything that I adore about Taylor Swift.
I loved the lyrics, and then I saw the video. Heartbreaking, but so beautiful.
This one brings me to my knees every. single. time. X Ambassadors was recently in Denver. I almost bought the VIP package just to meet these amazing artists in person. The timing didn’t work, but I will find a way to do this somewhere USA. This song sucked me in, but their music and lyrics are deeply heartfelt.
I confess that I have watched this one again, and again, and again. Over and over. The lyrics. The kaleidoscope imagery. That base reverberating the background. I love every single thing about this song.
So when I first heard this song, I thought she was in a very dysfunctional controlling relationship, and then I learned she was a Christian singer. But I still like this song and her voice.
When I got married in 1994, this was the song we did our first dance to. The marriage didn’t last, but I love the sentiment of this song, and hope to one day find a relationship again where this is possible. Side note – I have no clue why Suzy Bogguss did not become more famous. Her voice and her lyrics are spectacular – in this case heart felt, but also funny, joyful, spunky, in her other songs. I say I don’t like country music, but if it’s Suzy Bogguss I keep listening. Love her.
One more Suzy Boggus song that I just might sign along with as loudly as I can with tears streaming down my face. As needed.
I think everyone has experienced this as some point in their life. This is beautifully articulated. And when it first came out, I must have listened to it a dozen times in a row, and cried every time.
I’ll end on a more powerful note. I needed this song in high school or college. I graduated college in 1988. This song came out in 2018. Pretty much 30 years late for me, but I love the confidence and power in this song.
OK, I love the Judy Garland version (and I watch the Wizard of Oz every single year), but this version is more beautiful. And seriously any song with almost a billion “views” is worth a listen. This song makes me lean back and close my eyes, and just imagine.
