Dreams Crushed

I had not heard anything about the dream job for about a month. The last communication I had was an email from the Chair of the Search Committee who wrote in part:

You made a very positive impression on the Search Committee …I will let you know as soon as I know more.

Yesterday, I checked the status of my application on line and found this:

bc1

Ouch. I wish they would have  sent me an email or something letting me know. They only interviewed six of us  so it would not have been an enormous amount of work.

Mostly I am just sad. This is a great position with a wonderful organization. My professional skills and experience are a strong match for what is needed or so I thought.  Plus, I just love the place. I would have been great!  As much as I wanted to win the job, I really want to see this organization thrive and bloom. I hope that whoever they chose will be outstanding.

I suppose it is a good thing that our next and final HERS Institute session is on career mapping. Now that the dream job is out of reach, I need a plan B.

  1. Thanks Clay.
It’s hard to be too upset about this as much as I wanted this one specific opportunity. I do still have a challenging and rewarding day job as well as a start-up that I am involved with.
I am also blessed with colleagues who supported me in this endeavor, even at the risk of some cost to themselves. One of my friends/mentors sent me this “I always harbored some mixed emotions about the position—I strongly wanted you to win because it was your dream, but I realized that your role with XXXXX would be diminished. I value what you bring to the company, and your ability to make what I do better.”

  2. A bit late spotting this. Sorry you didn’t get it – but the experience of going through the process will have been invaluable, won’t it?

  3. Seriously?? They didn’t even tell you?! That is ridiculous! Are you sure that website is correct? You should check before being completely crushed; you know how bureaucracies are….

Indeed, the experience has been valuable. This was the first time I’d applied for a non-internal promotion so was a great learning experience.

I did finally get an email *today* wishing me well. It’s interesting. I will forward. So, yes, website was correct.
